Teaching at Global Kids

You need to be enthusiastic, passionate, eager, creative and fun to enjoy teaching children and to experience job satisfaction. In many ways a teacher has to be able to act and to dramatize. To be a great storyteller and to inspire. He or she needs to have the confidence to command the classroom and the ability to captivate his or her audience. Teaching styles vary tremendously and at Global Kids, we do not advocate one over another, but the basics remain the same. Make your students interested then communicate clearly. Make your children want to learn!
At Global Kids, there are, on average, 18-22 students per class. An active, enthusiastic and creative teacher is an effective teacher. Enthusiasm is the greatest asset to our teachers as the students can take this as their cue to work hard while having fun at the same time. A close second to enthusiasm is a willingness to learn yourself.

Regular duties
At Global Kids, some teachers work from 8:30 to 15:30 weekdays, while others work from 12:00 to 19:00.
Teaching children English is not an easy job and doing it well requires a great commitment from the individual. This is not a 'holiday' job, it's a full time position that comes with great responsibility.
In terms of day-to-day obligations, teachers must prepare for their classes. This includes writing a lesson plan for each class as well as making or gathering any props or teaching aids you may use to enhance your presentation. It is especially important with younger students to prepare visual aids. These include flashcards (pictures of words you want to teach), real objects or models. Since one of the goals of teaching is to make the language real, pictures can work wonders to this end.
Indeed, preparation is vital. A well-prepared class is much more beneficial for both the students and teachers.Walking into a classroom with 20 students watching you expectantly can unnerve even the strongest of us.
Besides preparing for classes, teachers have meetings about their classes and the students' status, do workshops and grade homework and tests.

Special Events

Global Kids organizes events from time to time throughout the year in which students take part, from Christmas and other pageants to speech competitions, graduation ceremonies and so forth.

Foreign teachers are asked to be involved in preparation for these. Preparation typically involves decorating the school or designing activities relating to the event.

Typically, these events are special occasions for students and by attending, foreign teachers can take part in a unique experience that is not afforded by the regular teaching schedule.

There will be times when the school will ask the teacher to do a "demo" lesson. These typically fall within normal working hours, but if not, they will be paid extra.

There may also be times when the teacher is asked if they would like to help out at other events such as school promotions and demos for the school.

Students

Education plays such a major role in a child's life in Taiwan that students here are generally better behaved than those in the West. Teachers are respected more, both by students and parents. For foreign teachers however, the relationship between student and foreign teacher is less tense. We try to instruct the students in a manner they are not accustomed to - creatively.

As students get used to having to participate in class, and as their level progresses, you will get to know them better - their likes and dislikes for instance. This helps make the job more enjoyable.
